Knights Win over Welch, McKinzie joins 1,000 Point Club

2.9.2013 | Grayson, Kentucky

On Saturday, Knights basketball welcomed the Flames of Welch College into the Dick Damron Hall of Champions. While a little slow getting into their rhythm, by halftime KCU had managed a 15 point spread at 51-36. In the second half, after a run by Welch to pull back to single digits, KCU pulled away to finish with a 33 point margin of victory, at 100-67.

Derek Lawson led all scorers with 37 points and 7 rebounds, while Clay McKenzie dropped in 19, including 3 3-pointers. Around the mid-point of the first half, play was stopped for a moment to recognize Clay, as he had just scored his 1,000th point as a Knight. David Darden scored 11 and had 6 boards, while Ace Puckett had 6 points but tied Lawson with 7 rebounds. Other Knights finding their way into the scoring column included Ros Goodwin with 7, including the only other 3 pointer for the Knights, and James Chafins, whose free throw brought the Knights over the century mark on the scoreboard.

The Knights will be in action again on Friday evening at 6 PM, which will kick off our exciting Homecoming weekend.
