Knights Come Up Short in Region Championship
Having to play the #1 team in the country for your regional title is a tough draw, and having to do it on their home court cannot make the challenge any easier. That was the task at hand for the Knights this weekend. After beating Crown College on Friday to advance to the title game, KCU had their hands full with the host school and current NCCAA #1.
The Knights played hard and looked good at times, but OCU was bigger and seemed to get all the friendly bounces in the very physical game. The Knights fell behind quickly, and were down 40-28 at the half. A run early in the 2nd period put the Trailblazers up as much as 20. KCU fought back, and cut the lead to as little as 9 points, but could do no better. OCU won by 16, 81-65. Derek Lawson led the Knights in scoring with 17, and David Darden was the only other Knight in double figures with 13. Andrew Roberts threw in 8 before fouling out, while McKinzie, Genung, Hunt, and Puckett contributed 6 each. Lawson had 9 boards, and Ace Puckett pulled down 5. The Knights shot 42.2% from the field, 31.6 from behind the line, and 71.4 from the foul line. Clay McKinzie and Dylan Genung were selected to the All-Tournament team, and on Friday evening, Ace Puckett was named All-Region Honorable Mention, while McKinzie earned First Team All-Region.
