Knights Defeat Royals at Home
On Saturday, January 18, the Knights and Lady Knights played host to the Royals of Johnson University from Knoxville, TN. After the Lady Knights won the 1 PM game, the Knights took the floor against the Royals. Johnson controlled the tip, and scored on their opening possession. They stretched this to a small lead before KCU was up to speed in the game. The Knights' Adam Hopkins hit a 3 to cut the lead to 9-5, then after nearly stealing a ball, manages to tie one up. This little spark of defense seemed to enliven the Knights, and they fought back hard after this, tying the game at 12 all. KCU went ahead at 20-18 on a Tyler Farley 3, with just over 8 minutes to go in the first. But Johnson fought back, and pulled out to a 38-31 lead by the half.
After the break, KCU found themselves pinned down for a great while. Johnson maintained their steady play and small lead. With 12 minutes remaining, KCU was down by 5 at 56-51. And then, things began to change. Johnson may have gotten tired, and they got in to some kind of foul trouble, and their defense began to sag a bit, and KCU sense the difference and took advantage of it. Caleb Ford hit a 3 with 7:18 to play, moving KCU up by 1 for the first time in the half, and Johnson took a time out. The Knights came out of the break energized and enthused, and scored 5 in a row, taking them to a 6 point lead. And they built on that lead the rest of the game, finishing at 82-67, for their first double-digit win of the year.
Caleb Ford was the leading scorer with 22, and 4 boards, while Trevor Hunt hit 17 to go with his 6 rebounds. Adam Hopkins finished with 14, and it was his shooting that kept the Knights in the game in the first half. Dylan Genung and Tyler Farley matched one another with 11 points and 5 boards each. The Knights shot .500 both from the line and behind the arc in the second half, and it was this steady play that saw them through the game. On Tuesday, the Knights will face Boyce College at home.
