Knight Basketball Wins at Home
On Friday evening the Flames of Welch College came to KCU for the first of two meetings this season. The Knights got out to a good start against a small Welch squad, which had only 1 player bigger than 6'1", and only 3 on the bench at any one time. The Knights controlled the tip, but missed twice on their first possession. The teams traded baskets a few times, and then Trevor Hunt put the Knights ahead at 8-6 with 16 minutes to play, and KCU never looked back. At 13:41 to play, Welch called timeout after the score went to 21-10 on back to back triples. The half progressed with KCU leading by the following scores: 30-18, 38-20, 44-26, and then 63-30 at the half.
In the second half, the Knights were not as aggressive, and both teams put 27 points on the board. The Knights were led in scoring by Caleb Ford with 19, and Trevor Hunt with 14. Ros Goodwin came off the bench for 13, including 3 of 4 three pointers. Farley had 10, Genung-9, Hopkins-8, Wooten-7, Chafins-5, Pearson-3, and Puckett-2. Boyce Wooten led the rebouding effort with 5, while Chafins and Ford each recorded blocks. The Knights shot .493 from the field, .462 from the arc, and .600 from the line. Welch won the battle of the boards with 36 boards while KCU put up 27. While they took fewer shots, Welch's shooting percentages were higher than KCU's at .535 from the field and nearly .700 from the foul line.
The Knights move to 7-12 on the year, and host Morthland College on Saturday. Game time is at 2 PM.
