Knights Win in Nashville
The Knights traveled to Nashville, TN on Saturday to take on the Flames of Welch College. A victory over Welch would secure the #2 seed in the coming Mid-East Region Tournament, and there were reasons to be optimistic, as KCU had soundly defeated Welch (by 33) just two weeks prior in Grayson. And although the Knights came out with the victory, it didn't come as easily as some in the recent past.
The Knights led by 24 at the half, 58-44, and should have been able to widen that margin in the second period, but that was not the case, as Welch outscored the Knights by 10 in the second period. However, KCU proved victorious with a 14-point margin, at 88-74.
The Knights were led by a pair of double-double performances, from Caleb Ford with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Ace Puckett with 20 points and 12 boards, as well as 2 blocks, 3 steals, and 4 assists. Trevor Hunt was the only other Knight in double figures, with 19 points, while Dylan Genung threw in 9, Tyler Farley dropped 7 and Ros Goodwin hit 1 three pointer. KCU dished out 20 assists, and pulled down 34 rebounds, while going only 11 of 20 from the free throw line.
On Tuesday, KCU will travel to Louisville to take on the Boyce College Bulldogs, the likely #3 seed in the region tournament, and possibly the team they will face in their first game of the region on Friday, February 28. The Knights are now 12-13, and have a strong chance of bettering .500 during the season, and that is a bit of a surprise for a squad that was 1-11 in mid-January.
