Marvin Newkirk III Named To All-America Team
On Wednesday, December 18, 2013, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the football players selected to the AFCA-NAIA (American Football Coaches Association) All-America Squads. Kentucky Christian University senior Marvin Newkirk III was named to the 2013 AFCA-NAIA All-American Defensive 2nd Team. Marvin is the first Kentucky Christian University player to receive this superlative.
Marvin Newkirk III is a senior Defensive Lineman majoring in Education. From Indiantown, Florida in the West Palm Beach area, he is a graduate of South Fork High School. Marvin has twice before been selected to NAIA Mid-South All-Conference Defensive teams, and was named to an NAIA Pre-Season All-America team by Football Gameplan Magazine.
Head Coach Gene Peterson spoke about Marvin: "The KCU Football Program is excited that Marvin Newkirk III was named a 2nd Team All-American. We are very proud of the way he represents our program and Kentucky Christian University. We know that he will be a positive influence in all of his endeavors." KCU President Jeff Metcalf spoke further about this the significance of this achievement: "It is fitting that Marvin become the first KCU student athlete to earn recognition as an AFCA-NAIA All-American. Although he certainly deserves national recognition for his ferocious play as a defensive lineman, the fact that Marvin excels in the classroom and is a young man of tremendous Christian character makes me doubly proud to have him represent KCU and its Christ-centered mission."
Marvin has been invited to participate in multiple all-star games, and is investigating the interest that professional teams would have in him. When his playing days are over, he plans to teach mathematics and coach football.
