Men's Soccer Sweeps Weekend Matches
The Knights Soccer team was itching to go after a week and a half of break away from competition. A scheduled trip to Hiwassee College late last week was cancelled when it was learned that Hiwassee could not muster a men's team this year. But it would appear that the unexpected break did some good, as the Knights were able to put down The Royal Crusaders of The Crown College on Friday evening, and then the Royals of Johnson University on Saturday afternoon.
In the match with The Crown College, The Knights managed a single goal in the 58th minute on a header by Michael Lien, on a crossed ball delivered by Derrek Richardson. The game was controlled closely by the Knights, allowing only 4 shots, while themselves taking 18, 9 of which were on-goal. Goal-Keeper Chace Adkins recorded his first shut out of the season, while making only 1 save. Richardson and Caleb Yankey pressured The Crown's defense, with a total of 6 shots on-goal between them.
On Saturday afternoon, the Knights met Johnson University, and there was a similar result. KCU's Jon-Eric Stiles put in the first of his two goals in the 41st minute, and he added another on a Penalty Kick early in the second half. The Knight defense held the Royals to only 9 shots on the day, while themselves taking 22. KCU took 4 corner kicks while giving up 3. Freshman Keeper Chace Adkins was credited with 8 saves in his second consecutive shut-out.
The Knights are now 4-6 on the season, and are 2-3 against NCCAA-II Mid-East Region teams. They next face Appalachian Bible College on Tuesday at 4 PM in Knight Stadium, and are eager to avenge a 1-0 loss at ABC from week 2.
