Lady Knights at Pikeville
On Monday the Lady Knights journeyed to the University of Pikeville to take on the Bears, who were 9-16 coming into the game. After a slow start, KCU was behind 8-0 before Tanya Bowens drove for the first points. Less than 6 minutes into the game, U Pike platooned a second group of 5 players, but Rachel Chester dropped a long three to pull to 7-12. After the U Pike first five returned KCU found themselves down 20-9, but the Lady Knight’s resolve returned after buckets by Chester and Monica Stevens, then a steal and lay-in by Bowens. KCU next began a 12-2 run that saw buckets from Bowens, Jones, and Jessica Marshall. The first half ended with the Lady Knights up 31-29.
Stevens opened the second half with a bucket, and Marshall threw in a three to get KCU up by 5. With leads as high as 7, KCU maintained their advantage until U Pike tied the score at 60, with 5:21 remaining. The next few minutes saw 2 ties and 3 lead changes, and at 20.8 seconds to go, Stevens hit a free throw to bring the Lady Knights back to within 2. After Katelyn Meyer stole the inbounds pass, KCU had the opening they sought. Some good defense by U Pike forced KCU to take a long 3, and when U Pike grabbed the miss, the outcome was apparent. U Pike hit 2 foul shots with 2.1 seconds remaining to set the final score at 73-69.
Tanya Bowens led all scorers with 30 points, but KCU saw efforts of 11 and 10 by Katelyn Marshall and Sharonda Jones, who also had 8 boards. Three others had 6 rebounds each. KCU shot 45% from the field, but only 55% from the line, and were 6-18 from behind the arc. This loss brings the Lady Knights record to 14-15 for the season. On Friday evening at 8 PM, during their Homecoming Game, the Lady Knights will seek to avenge this loss to the U Pike Bears.
