Lady Knights Defeat Ohio Christian
It was cold and snowy outside but things were really heating up in the OCU gym on Tuesday night as the KCU Lady Knights visited OCU for the second installment of the Mideast Region Showdown. OCU defeated KCU in Grayson January 11th so this game was very important for both teams. KCU scored first and never trailed as the game was close through the first 34 minutes. KCU led43-39 at halftime as both teams played with the expected enthusiasm befitting such a matchup. OCU came into the game ranked #1 in NCCAA II and KCU was ranked #2. KCU led 60-56 with 10 minutes remaining and OCU's Blair hit a basket to cut the margain to 2. KCU then went on an 11-0 run to take the lead to 13 and just kept going, outscoring OCU 35-11 over the last 9:19 of the game. Junior Tara Weddle led the way for KCU with 27 points. Freshman point guard Tanya Bowens added 18 and Junior guard Autumn Carter had 17. Freshman Jessica Marshall added 9 with freshman Monica Stevens scoring 8. Coach Arnett had this to say during the post-game interview, "Our post players gave us tremendous effort in the paint. Stevens, Kenley and Savage got us 14 points and 15 rebounds combined. That was huge for us. Our outside players made the shots and the run at the end was fantastic. I have been looking for this sustained effort all year." For OCU Kaitie Wyeth led the way with 22 points while Danielle Fleming added 21. These two leaders of NCCAA II Women's Basketball will more than likely meet in the Mideast Region Championship game on Saturday, February 26th in Nashville. The prize there will probably be the #1 seed in the NCCAA II National Tournament which will be hosted this year by Ohio Christian University. The possibilities are outstanding for more basketball excitement as the tournament approaches.
