Volleyball 2-2 on the Weekend
Lusby Gymnasium was the host this weekend to an immense amount of volleyball. The Lady Knights held 2 tri-matches, as well as a JV Volleyball match, with strong competition all around. It was a weekend of strong play and stiff competition for those involved. KCU's first match of the weekend began on Friday evening with Ohio Valley University, a team that KCU had beaten at a tournament just 3 weekends ago. The Lady Knights were flat, and played with little heart. OVU was victorious in 4 sets with KCU losing with scores of 17, 12, and 15, while the single set win was only by a margin of 2 points. At 7 PM Ohio Valley took on University of Pikeville, and walked over them in 3 sets. At 9 PM, a humbled and motivated KCU took the floor again, and some of the spark returned. KCU won the first 27-25, then lost the second at 21, only to take the three and four at 19 and 18, respectively.
On Saturday, West Virginia Univerity @ Parkersburg, a second year program with only 6 players, came to Lusby, and were dispatched by the Lady Knights quickly in 3 sets, with WVU-P scoring only 11 points in the first two sets, before Coach Dixon subbed a different set of attackers. WVU-P played Asbury University at 2 PM, and fell to them very quickly as well. At 4 PM, KCU met Asbury. While KCU lost in 3 sets, the play was inspired, and there were many long rallies, against a much larger team. KCU scored 19, 21, and 19 against Asbury to go down in straight sets, but Head Coach Bruce Dixon was pleased with the effort. " We were 2-2 on the weekend, but we are a much better team coming out than we went in. We have some fire in our tummies, and that is something that is needed at this time of the year".
The Lady Knights were led on the weekend by Junior Middle Hitter Jenna Kelley with 44 kills, 5 aces, and 2 blocks. Magen Daniel had 39 kills and 10 blocks. Freshman Outside Hitter Abbi McIlhany had 37 kills, 2 aces, 6 blockes, 41 digs and 12 receptions. Sophomore OH Kylie Rice had 24 kills, including a season-high 13 for her against U Pike. Libero Jessi Hartzler carded 86 digs and 80 receptions, as well as 2 aces. Junior setter Lauren Dunn had 123 assists on the weekend, with only 2 errors, as well as 6 blocks and 4 kills. She also had 43 serves without error. .
KCU Volleyball is now 20-8 on the season, and is next in action on Tuesday evening against Cincinnati Christian University at 7 PM, in their last home match of the season.
