Volleyball Wins at Home

10.22.2013 | Kentucky Christian University -- Grayson, KY

Tuesday evening was the last home volleyball match for the Lady Knight Varsity Squad, as they played host to the Eagles of Cincinnati Christian University. At 5 PM, the KCU JV took on the Alice Lloyd College Eagles. The Junior Varsity squad won the match 3-0, with set scores of 25-9, 25-16, 25-13. KCU was led by Paige Elliott with 9 kills on 16 attempts, and with Tommi Butler and Kate Rigney with 5 kills each. Freshman setter Mariah Compton had 14 assists and 19 digs, as well as 2 kills and 1 ace. Leann King had 5 kills and 2 aces, while Sarah Linn had 2 kills , 1 assist, and 1 block. The KCU JV is now 9-5 on the season, and hosts University of Charleston-Beckley on Friday evening for their final match.

Prior to the start of the Varsity match with Cincinnati Christian University, Junior Setter Lauren Dunn, was recognized as Kentucky Christian University's all-time assist leader, as she passed the previous record, 2166 assists, set by Grace Conkel in the mid-2000's. Lauren passed the career record earlier this season, and advanced the record by the end of the night to 2869, which is 703 above the previous mark. And because Lauren is a Junior, it is possible that she will amass an unreachable number before she leaves KCU.

The Lady Knights came out blazing, and took a lead of 8 points early in the first set, only to slow down and give most of it back before the end of the first. But KCU held on to win the match in 3 straight sets, and played well for most of the night, in spite of injuries to Magen Daniel and Tommi Butler, Magen's replacement. Tommi played much of the 3rd set with a sprained ankle, and Magen did not return to the match after leaving in the middle of set #2 with pain in her elbow. KCU won the match with the following scores: 25-21, 26-24, and 25-21.

KCU played a great team match, and all of the hitters contributed significantly; Kylie Rice with 5 kills, Abbi McIlhany with 9, Jenna Kelley with 13, and Kate Rigney with 5. The Lady Knights had 11 attack errors on the evening, but hit only at a .220 pace. Libero Jessi Hartzler had 22 digs and 26 receptions, while McIlhany added 18 and 9, respectively. Lauren Dunn added 27 assists on 89 sets, and pulled up 9 digs.

The Lady Knights travel to WVU-Parkersbury on Saturday, and then to Berea on Tuesday.
