Lady Knight Volleyball Win Region, Advance to National Tournament
Lady Knight Volleyball went to the NCCAA-II Mid-East Region tournament with a 22-9 record, and having lost only to one regional opponent during the season. They returned home on Saturday evening with a 26-9 record, a regional title, and a berth in the National Championship Tournament, to be held in Lincoln, Illinois in a couple of weeks.
On Friday, KCU defeated host Appalachian Bible College in straight sets, and then took down The Crown College 3-0 as well. The Semi-Final on Saturday pitted #1 seed KCU against #3 Johnson University, but the margin was the same. In the afternoon match, KCU found themselves facing Ohio Christian University, the #2 seed, and the only NCCAA team which had defeated the Lady Knights this season.
As usual, the match was very close, with both teams playing very well. KCU started slowly, and fell behind slightly in the first set, but found their rhythm just before the Trailblazers closed the set at 25-21. KCU pulled out to a small lead in the second set, and won games #2 & #3, 25-17 & 25-23. Ohio Christian rallied to extend the match after being down in set 4, and won 28-26. KCU took the deciding set 15-5.
This victory guaranteed KCU a spot in the national tournament. Named to the Mid-East All-Region team were: Libero Jessi Hartzler, Middle Blocker Magen Daniel, Middle Blocker Jenna Kelley, and Setter Lauren Dunn, who was picked as the Mid-East Region MVP. Coach Bruce Dixon was named Coach of the Year.
