Volleyball Earns #1 Seed in National Tournament

11.10.2013 | Kentucky Christian University -- Grayson, KY

Kentucky Christian University’s Lady Knight Volleyball team is headed to the National Championship as the overall #1 seed. While Coach Bruce Dixon has gone to the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship Tournament for each of the past six seasons, and a few times prior to that, no team from the Mid-East Region has ever been selected as the overall #1 seed. For the past several years, Clearwater Christian College, of Clearwater, FL has been the favorite, on the backs of their numerous consecutive championship wins. But Clearwater has faltered just a bit this year, giving the selection committee an opportunity to award another team the top seed.

“This is by no means an indication that Clearwater Christian is going to be any easier to defeat than in years past”, said KCU head coach Bruce Dixon. “They are a strong program with a history of winning the last match of their season. There are several teams equally deserving of the prime spot in the tournament bracket. Anyone in the tournament could have a great weekend and win this thing.”

The tournament seeding is as follows: 1. Kentucky Christian University (Grayson, KY); 2. Clearwater Christian University (Clearwater, FL); 3. Lincoln Christian University (Lincoln, IL); 4. Manhattan Christian College (Manhattan, KS); 5. Cairn University (Langhorne, PA); 6. Maranatha Bible College (Watertown, WI); 7. Arlington Baptist College (Arlington, TX); 8, Ozark Christian College (Joplin, MO); 9. Providence University College (Otterburne, Manitoba, Canada); and 10. West Coast Baptist College(Lancaster, CA). Maranatha Bible College and Ozark Christian College were selected as “at-large” teams for the event, each of their others earned their berths as Regional Champions.
The tournament is being played at Lincoln Christian University in southern Illinois. Tournament play begins on Thursday with 2 pools of 5 teams. KCU will play the following schedule: Thursday, 1 PM (EST) – Providence University College; Thursday, 6:30 PM – Cairn University; Friday, 11 AM – Ozark Christian University; Friday, 5 PM – Manhattan Christian College. The top 2 teams from each pool will advance to Saturday’s Semi-finals, with the Championship match being held at 5 PM EST.

The Lady Knight program has had a strong year, with the varsity going 26-11 thus far. In the first year of Junior Varsity play, that program finished 10-5. KCU’s two teams combined lost only 1 match to a “non-scholarship school”. All of the teams participating in the event will travel on Tuesday, and Wednesday will be an opportunity to practice briefly in the tournament facility, attend and awards banquet, and work together on some christian service project in the area.
